Mark Xing
Mark Xing (Qingsheng), Shenzhen,China, ISC Coordinator for China Projects

Mark graduated with a BA from Central-China Normal University, China and an MA from the University of Nottingham, UK. Since his graduation from the university, he has been working as a teacher of English in middle schools.

He has been given numerous awards for his expertise in teaching and dedication to education as well as his students’ academically excellent performance.  In addition, he had a couple of years’ experience being a principal of a high school, which was awarded a title of “Provincially First-class School” during his administration.  He boasts his highly efficient and democratized school management.  He is presently teaching in Second Foreign Languages School of Nanshan, Shenzhen, China.  In addition he is acting as Director of the school’s English Center, Chairperson of the English subject, and Coordinator of school’s international connections.  Mark is also a member of the Principals’ Council of the ISC.

The latest big project is a three-continent initiative, called the Global Partnership Project, between the school districts of Nashan/Shenzhen in China, Pasco County in the USA, and Stockholm City in Sweden.  He is the project coordinator for the 11 Nashan Schools that are participating.  In this role he is a member of the GPP project’s leadership team, called the PSN.  He is now working with Nanshan GPP project schools to guide their students to surpass beyond the limits of parochial nationalism and to enter into a globalized community to address the challenges with which all human beings are being confronted.

In reviewing the ISC work that I have been involved in over the past 2 years, my life has been substantially enriched and more seems more significant.  For me, the GPP project and other projects in the ISC are now part of my daily life as an indispensable obligation.  I envision that the global learning project we are developing now across the world will one day be part of local school curriculum, everywhere, in the near future.

China Quake: Donation in our school

Submitted by: Mark Xing, Teacher Nanshan Second Foreign Languages School Shenzhen

Though a bit far from the epicenter, all the students and teachers from Nanshan 2nd Foreign Languages School Shenzhen showed their deep concern and great care for those people, especially the students and teachers who are stranded and still waiting to be saved.  Donation was held on the campus this morning for the people in those earthquake stricken areas.  All the students and teachers did all they could to help those people in great need.  The money donated by students and teachers in this school is up to 120,000 RMB yuan.  We pray for those people, hoping the death toll stops rising and people there are able to get back to normal as soon as possible.

Yihan Fan's Trip to the Sun

I arrived very early on the 9th, due to a flight delay to Orlando, Florida USA.  At 3 in the morning, when we started to land, the beautiful lights of all colors enthralled me, and all the beautiful colors, as I see, seemed to be a great omen for my wonderful stay.

It was indeed a wonderful trip, and the 11 days I was in the US were fully packed with good experiences that mean a lot to me.  I was the guest of Mr. Robert Hartley, principal of Lakeland-Highlands Middle School in Polk County Florida.  Mr. and Mrs. Hartley attended the ISC Summit in Beijing, at our school Beijing 101 Middle School.  This writing might seem very long, but judging from the Hartley family’s wonderful arrangements and all that I have experienced, the story could have been lengthened way more than what I have here.

IDS - The Great Journey Series – China Trip

By Morgan Mills, Independent Day School, Grade 8

Last October I had the opportunity to visit Beijing, China for the ISC Youth Summit. While there, in addition to the Summit and shadowing students at Beijing 101 Middle School, I also learned about the culture firsthand. During one of the excursions, I visited the “Temple of Heaven,” which was a beautifully clean park, once known as a holy ground.
