Sixteen students from Tampa and Lakeland recently attended the First International School Connection Youth Summit, “Youth Leaders for Global Understanding,” which was held in Beijing, China in October of 2007. Last year, people representing 8 countries attended the ISC Summit, which was held in Tampa at MOSI and Independent Day School – Corbett Campus. At that time, students from China and the United States began planning the format, activities, and objectives that would help the first youth summit develop global leaders and enhance understanding between cultures. Throughout this past year, students and educators met in person, by email and by videoconference to prepare for the summit. This past October, eighty students from Sweden, Canada, China and the United States met for four days. It was amazing to see students of different ages, countries and cultures work together in teams to brainstorm needs and ideas for the future. Students worked together to define what a global leader is, to compare and contrast Chinese schools with schools from their own countries, and to summarize and present their findings to the members of the adult conference that was being held simultaneously. The International School Connection was formed in the 1990’s with the goal to bring schools together to share best practices and to have educators work collaboratively in preparing our youth for the global community of the future. Conferences have been held in a variety of countries including Spain, China and the United States. There are currently fifteen ISC hubs around the world. The next youth summit is tentatively planned for spring 2008 in Curacao. As the world gets ready for the Olympics in Beijing, students wanted to share their experience about China and the Summit with their local community. Watch for stories throughout the year from students who attended the “Youth Leaders for Global Understanding” Summit and traveled to Beijing and Xi’an, China. For more information on ISC, go to: www.iscweb.org. There will be a meeting on February 25th from 5-7pm to work together to create an ISC Hub System that supports ISC work in the Tampa Bay Region as schools become global learning centers.
