Students from Three Continents Connect Online PDF Print E-mail

Mark Xing, Shenzhen China and Betty Norlin, Tampa Florida USA

On October 22, 2008 three schools on three different continents had a 45-minute video-conference with students:  Second Foreign Languages School of Nanshan (SFLSN), Shenzhen, China, Independent Day School (IDS) in Tampa, Florida, USA, and C.E.D. Lledˆu of Castellon, Spain.  Students from Spain were visiting IDS in Florida at the time of the conference for a three week Study Tour.

The purpose of this international connection was to get students acquainted with and knowledgeable about local sea ecological environments, and specifically to study the water cycle.  The intent was to raise students’ awareness about water and sea animals, to protect water resources and local sea ecological environments, as well as secure the safety of sea animals. Eighth grade students from SFLSN in China connected with sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from IDS in the USA, and eighth and ninth grade students from Lledˆu in Castellon Spain.  The purpose of the video conference was for sharing what the students had learned about water. The information they shared included:
  • Water resources and how to protect and save the environment,
  • How water was processed in China and in Spain,
  • How students at IDS researched water and environmental health through programs such as Rainbow River and LakeWatch.

Students from Spain and Tampa shared information about beaches, and sea animals that are found in the waters near their homes.  One student who is attending IDS in the USA moved to the United States from France three years ago.  He is part of a Cultural Exchange Team class and shared information about the beaches and sea animals in France.

Twenty-two students from SFLSN spoke to their peers during the video conference, while eight students from grade seven came to observe this conference.  In addition to students and teachers from these three schools sharing during the video conference, observers from five other schools in China were invited to attend.

Twelve students from Lledˆu in Spain were visiting IDS in the USA for a study tour program for three weeks.  This is the first Study Tour program between the two schools, and the second Study Tour program that IDS has hosted.  The purpose of this program is to help students from Lledˆu improve their English and learn more about the American culture.  During their stay at IDS they worked on PowerPoint presentations to share information about their beaches, sea animals and water resources with SFLSN and IDS.  As they spoke, they shared their PowerPoint presentations with the other two schools.

Sixteen students from IDS shared information about beaches, sea animals and two programs that were completed to study ecosystems (Rainbow River) and healthy water resources (LakeWatch).  Students from four countries (France included) took turns speaking, followed by questions and answers.  The students were very happy and excited.  It was magical and inspiring for students from three continents to meet online with the common purpose: to care about their environment and learn from each other.

China Quake: Donation in our school

Submitted by: Mark Xing, Teacher Nanshan Second Foreign Languages School Shenzhen

Though a bit far from the epicenter, all the students and teachers from Nanshan 2nd Foreign Languages School Shenzhen showed their deep concern and great care for those people, especially the students and teachers who are stranded and still waiting to be saved.  Donation was held on the campus this morning for the people in those earthquake stricken areas.  All the students and teachers did all they could to help those people in great need.  The money donated by students and teachers in this school is up to 120,000 RMB yuan.  We pray for those people, hoping the death toll stops rising and people there are able to get back to normal as soon as possible.

Yihan Fan's Trip to the Sun

I arrived very early on the 9th, due to a flight delay to Orlando, Florida USA.  At 3 in the morning, when we started to land, the beautiful lights of all colors enthralled me, and all the beautiful colors, as I see, seemed to be a great omen for my wonderful stay.

It was indeed a wonderful trip, and the 11 days I was in the US were fully packed with good experiences that mean a lot to me.  I was the guest of Mr. Robert Hartley, principal of Lakeland-Highlands Middle School in Polk County Florida.  Mr. and Mrs. Hartley attended the ISC Summit in Beijing, at our school Beijing 101 Middle School.  This writing might seem very long, but judging from the Hartley family’s wonderful arrangements and all that I have experienced, the story could have been lengthened way more than what I have here.

IDS - The Great Journey Series – China Trip

By Morgan Mills, Independent Day School, Grade 8

Last October I had the opportunity to visit Beijing, China for the ISC Youth Summit. While there, in addition to the Summit and shadowing students at Beijing 101 Middle School, I also learned about the culture firsthand. During one of the excursions, I visited the “Temple of Heaven,” which was a beautifully clean park, once known as a holy ground.
