ISC Youth World Conference

The 2010 International School Connection Youth World Conference will be held in Nyköping, Sweden September 21-24, 2010 (Tuesday—Friday).  The purpose is to facilitate the connection of international youth to develop positive leadership skills and to foster global citizenship.  Participants will explore the issue of the world’s lifeblood—diminishing access to and preservation of clean drinking water.  This global concern will be explored in a variety of ways culminating with the creation of action plans so participants can make a local or global impact upon their return to their own communities.

Each day of the conference will include youth leadership training, simulations, participant presentations, and reflection.  Cultural exploration will occur through various activities including immersion in the host country.  Participants will have the opportunity to share their own culture. Students will periodically meet in age-level groups with ISC Youth College Assistants taking an active leadership role.  Participants will visit local schools where they will have the opportunity to dialogue with Swedish students and school staff.  Wednesday evening, an optional activity will be available to youth participants to encourage informal dialogue in order to strengthen connections and become immersed in different cultures.  The final day of the conference will end with an evening celebration.

Youth participants will return home with an appreciation for other cultures, differing opinions, and ways of life.  By working together across cultures, they will sharpen the 21st century skills they need to be responsible global citizens.  The conference will inspire young people to discover the possibilities and strengths that are born of working as part of a global community!

Purpose of the Youth World Conference
  • To develop aptitude as global citizens and engage in dialogue exploring global citizenship and leadership
  • To implement an action plan related to a global issue
  • To expose middle and high school youth to other cultures, customs, and educational systems which include school visitations
  • To help tomorrow’s leaders gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world
  • To participate in purposeful activities relating to ISC Benchmarks
  • To bring students from six continents together
  • To provide leadership opportunities for ISC Youth College Assistants

China Quake: Donation in our school

Submitted by: Mark Xing, Teacher Nanshan Second Foreign Languages School Shenzhen

Though a bit far from the epicenter, all the students and teachers from Nanshan 2nd Foreign Languages School Shenzhen showed their deep concern and great care for those people, especially the students and teachers who are stranded and still waiting to be saved.  Donation was held on the campus this morning for the people in those earthquake stricken areas.  All the students and teachers did all they could to help those people in great need.  The money donated by students and teachers in this school is up to 120,000 RMB yuan.  We pray for those people, hoping the death toll stops rising and people there are able to get back to normal as soon as possible.

Yihan Fan's Trip to the Sun

I arrived very early on the 9th, due to a flight delay to Orlando, Florida USA.  At 3 in the morning, when we started to land, the beautiful lights of all colors enthralled me, and all the beautiful colors, as I see, seemed to be a great omen for my wonderful stay.

It was indeed a wonderful trip, and the 11 days I was in the US were fully packed with good experiences that mean a lot to me.  I was the guest of Mr. Robert Hartley, principal of Lakeland-Highlands Middle School in Polk County Florida.  Mr. and Mrs. Hartley attended the ISC Summit in Beijing, at our school Beijing 101 Middle School.  This writing might seem very long, but judging from the Hartley family’s wonderful arrangements and all that I have experienced, the story could have been lengthened way more than what I have here.

IDS - The Great Journey Series – China Trip

By Morgan Mills, Independent Day School, Grade 8

Last October I had the opportunity to visit Beijing, China for the ISC Youth Summit. While there, in addition to the Summit and shadowing students at Beijing 101 Middle School, I also learned about the culture firsthand. During one of the excursions, I visited the “Temple of Heaven,” which was a beautifully clean park, once known as a holy ground.
